Personally I cannot read or watch Harry Potter. Yes the films have great acting talents in the cast but the quality is shoddy and monotonous. But what do I know? The same as Stewart Lee it seems.

Issues with Harry Potter books

Religious and Moral Concerns

One of the earliest and most persistent criticisms of the “Harry Potter” books comes from some religious groups. These critics argue that the books promote witchcraft and the occult, potentially encouraging children to explore these areas in real life. They believe that the portrayal of magic, spells, and sorcery is incompatible with their religious teachings. In some extreme cases, the books have been banned from schools and libraries due to these concerns.

Violence and Dark Themes

As the series progresses, it delves into increasingly dark and violent themes. Critics argue that the depiction of death, torture, and other forms of violence is inappropriate for younger readers. They worry that the books may desensitise children to violence or cause them emotional distress. The depiction of intense battles, the deaths of beloved characters, and the overall dark tone of the later books have been points of contention.

Portrayal of Authority and Rules

Some educators and parents have criticized the “Harry Potter” series for its portrayal of authority figures and rules. The main characters often break rules and defy authority, yet they are usually portrayed as heroes. Critics argue that this could send the wrong message to children, encouraging them to disregard rules and challenge authority inappropriately.

Cultural and Racial Representation

The “Harry Potter” series has also been criticized for its representation of different cultures and races. Some argue that the books lack diversity, with most characters being white and British. Additionally, the portrayal of certain characters, such as the goblins who run Gringotts Bank, has been criticised for perpetuating negative stereotypes. Critics claim that these representations can reinforce harmful biases and lack sensitivity towards marginalised groups.

Gender Representation

While “Harry Potter” features strong female characters like Hermione Granger, the series has been criticised for its overall gender representation. Some critics argue that female characters are often sidelined and that the narrative is predominantly focused on male characters. They also point out that the series sometimes relies on traditional gender roles and stereotypes.

Author’s Controversial Statements

In recent years, J.K. Rowling herself has become a subject of controversy due to her public statements on social and political issues, particularly her views on transgender rights. Critics argue that her statements have negatively impacted the “Harry Potter” series, causing some fans to distance themselves from the books and the larger Harry Potter franchise. This controversy has sparked debates about separating the art from the artist and the impact of an author’s views on their work.

Literary Quality

Some literary critics argue that while the “Harry Potter” books are entertaining and imaginative, they are not particularly well-written. They point to perceived issues with the prose, plot structure, and character development. These critics argue that the books’ massive popularity does not necessarily equate to high literary quality.

It is the issue of literary quality that Stewart has an issue with.
