Rally in Weymouth: Saturday 10 August

A huge movement of unity against racism and fascism has appeared across the UK. Streets have been filled with people opposed to hatred and violence, showing solidarity with those who are the target of prejudice and discrimination.

On Saturday, August 10, the solidarity movement will hold a Unity Rally in Weymouth (New Bond Street, 11am) to show that Dorset too stands against the racists.

Stand Up To Racism deplores racist attacks on our communities, and in particular the targeting of our fellow citizens – Muslims and people of migrant heritage. We stand in solidarity with those who have been the target of assaults on mosques and hotels accommodating refugees.

Last Sunday, the hate-filled ideas of the extreme right reached Weymouth. Crowds shouting racist slogans descended on the Esplanade and assaulted police. Bottles and stones were thrown. In contrast, a demonstration called by Stand Up To Racism Dorset was united, peaceful and purposeful in putting forward a message of community unity.

The recent tragic killings in Southport deserve our unity, not division and hatred. We can’t let the far right spread racist lies, whether it is targeting Muslims in Southport or refugees on the Bibby Stockholm barge in Portland.

We recall the history of fascism. In the 1930s Jewish people, synagogues and businesses were targets for racist violence. They were blamed for problems we still see in Dorset today – low wages, high rents, declining public services.

But now it is Muslims, migrants and refugees who are targeted for blame. How wrong, when many services such as our local hospitals depend upon people who have travelled from abroad to work as doctors, nurses and as other valued professionals. They are our fellow citizens.

The far right is spreading racism, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism and division. These dangerous developments require an urgent response, uniting against hatred. We call on people in Dorset to stand with all those under attack. We ask community groups, trade unions, faith groups and others to stand together for social justice and equality.

Please join us at a Unity Rally on Saturday 10 August at 11am in New Bond Street, Weymouth DT4 8LY (outside The Range).
