Up to 80 protestors demonstrated in Weymouth on Saturday, 19 October, on a national day of action called by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, under the slogans “Stop the Genocide in Gaza – Hands Off Lebanon – Don’t Attack Iran”. A “die-in” was held and a minute silence for the over 42,000 known victims of Israel’s war on Gaza, the majority of whom are women and children. Protestors then marched through Weymouth centre with some passers-by joining on the way.

Over 40 protests were held in cities and towns across Britain, with 30,000 demonstrating in London’s Trafagar Square, before laying flowers and children’s toys at the gates of Downing Street.

The emergency demonstrations were called after scenes of the incineration of Palestinian refugees in tents at Al Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Gaza went across the world, including 19 year old Shaban al-Dalou, still attached to an IV drip, unable to escape the flames.

The atrocity came at a time when Israel’s attacks on the north of Gaza have escalated to a state of seige. The 400,000 Palestinians in the north of Gaza have been told to leave but have nowhere to go to. The vast majority of Palestinians in Gaza are internally displaced. Palestinians report they are being shot at as they evacuate, shown in footage from CNN.

Over 80 percent of Palestinians, 1.9 million are internally displaced. The British government has itself acknowledged that there are no safe places in Gaza, that no food aid is being delivered to northern Gaza, with Israel denying or impeding the vast majority of humanitarian aid.

Rob Ferguson, secretary of Dorset Palestine PSC attacked the government for continuing to supply arms to Israel.

“Some 69% of Britons say Israel should stop military action and call a ceasefirre according to YouGov polling. Fifty-six percent of Britons support ending arms sales to Israel as against only 13 percent who say sales should continue. This is genocide and the US and British governments are not just complicit, they are now active agents in the mass slaughter of civilians and in supporting Israel as it spreads its attacks on the Lebanon, and the threat of war across the region”.
