Take your cycling further with Sky Ride Local in Bournemouth

Bournemouth Borough Council has teamed up with British Cycling once again as they launch their toughest guided rides yet, with a new ‘Ride Further’ series designed to test riders over longer distances.

The new series, which is set to launch in Bournemouth at the end of September,  will see British Cycling trained Ride Leaders guiding intrepid cyclists on scenic routes designed to test them over longer distances than ever before.

The new ‘Ride Further’ series will pick up the buzz from the Tour of Britain, which concludes on September 14, launching September 28 the first Ride Further Bournemouth will take participants on a stunning 42 mile loop of the New Forest. Starting from the Hiker Cafe, Hengistbury Head the route will take cyclists through the WW2 aerodrome at Holmsley, and past the stunning Rhinefield House before heading back towards Bournemouth.

Councillor Michael Filer, Cabinet Member for Transport, said “We are delighted to continue our partnership with British Cycling providing free guided rides to the town.

“Most of the rides we have previously offered have focused on introducing people to leisure cycling; it is great to be able to offer something to the towns more seasoned riders, who may be looking to stretch their legs a bit further afield.”

Stewart Kellett, British Cycling’s Director of Recreation and Partnerships, said the new series would help to provide a progression for those cyclists wanting to test themselves over longer distances, discover new routes and enjoy the social aspects of riding, supported, with other people.

“We have seen such a huge growth in regular cycling in Britain over the last few years, and we realise that a key to this is being able to provide appropriate opportunities to everyone, whether that is an easygoing and gentle introduction or something more challenging over a longer distance.”

The new Ride Further programme will include rides of approximately 40 miles and is geared towards cyclists with some experience of longer rides; all participants must use road bikes, bring a basic repair kit and be competent and confident over the distance.
