A lecture by an artist-curator, on the ever fascinating relationship between art and the natural environment
Angela Cockayne teaches at the University of Bath and works as an artist-activist with text, natural science and ecology, to address some of the most urgent issues of our time. Explorations of gender and hierarchies of practice are integral to her work. Her temporary installations, inspired by the ‘cabinets of curiosities’ of earlier polymath collectors, have marshaled artifacts of all kinds: found and natural objects as well as her own studio-made work. She has used film and photography and produced art books. A recent example of how such diverse media can be brought together in a single project is Dominion (Wunderkammer Press 2012) a collaboration with writer and fellow Lecturer on Everything, Philip Hoare.
Angela Cockayne is an artist, curator and co-author of two works of non fiction Dominion, A Whale Symposium (2012) and Provenance (2010), a 21st century response to the cabinet of curiosity both published by Wunderkammer Press. She is a Senior Lecturer and Reader in Interdisciplinary Visual Practice at Bath Spa University.
She has shown work in contexts as diverse as Chimera, Museum of History of Science, Oxford 2008, Tate St Ives, Dark Monarch exhibition, and a solo exhibition at Parabola Art Centre, as part of the 2011 Cheltenham Science Festival. This was followed by a solo show at Peninsular Art at Universityof Plymouth. Recent projects include the internationally acclaimed Moby-Dick Big Read with author Philip Hoare.
