Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) is holding its first ‘art workshop’ at its Urban Wildlife Centre in Corfe Mullen this summer, using inspiration from nearby nature reserve, Upton Heath.

The workshops will be led by local freelance artist and curator, Julie Herring.  Julie will teach observational drawing skills, inspired by nature, along with practical hints and tips to get the best out of your artistic talent.

Julie has studied Fine Art Painting and Natural History Illustration and has a great interest in the design and patterns found in nature.  Julie said, “One of my greatest pleasures is to spend time outdoors in the natural environment and drawingis a way of getting closer to it. The art activity can improve your well-being by feeling connected. When you look at wild flowers, trees or wildlife in detail, your enjoyment is enhanced.

Nowadays, our every day, busy lives often mean we are working in solitude, using technology and working indoors a majority of the time.  This lifestyle excludes us from the simple pleasures of the natural world.  Being outside in the fresh air, in a beautiful landscape, drawing and sharing artistic views with other people, can be very healthy, sociable and a rewarding experience.”

DWT Learning and Interpretation Officer for The Great Heath, Nicky Hoar, said, “We are excited about exploring a new way of enjoying and being inspired by the nature of our heaths.  This is a chance for people to get closer to nature and find new ways to interpret and record what they see.”

A creative kids art workshop will be held on Thursday 13th August from 10am – 1pm (cost – £5 per child, accompanying adults free), and an adults workshop will be held on Thursday 17th September from 10am -1pm (£5 per adult), both at DWT’s Urban Wildlife Centre in Corfe Mullen (BH21 3RX).

Refreshments will be provided.  Please wear suitable footwear for (weather permitting) a short walk on Upton Heath. Suitable for ages 10+, no unaccompanied children.  Booking is essential on 01202 692033 or email [email protected].
