We start a new week today with the full knowledge of what the far-right is capable of. The mask has slipped, and we see them for what they are – violent, cowardly thugs. Now, the “concerned citizen with legitimate grievances” narrative is going to keep going, so let’s address these “concerns” head-on and dismiss them for the patent nonsense they are.

Concerned about the lack of social housing? Blame the 14 years of Tory misgovernance and the selling off of social housing, not migrants. Politicians, not refugees, are responsible for the housing crisis. But sure, let’s keep pretending it’s the people fleeing war who caused the housing shortage, not years of bad policy.

Concerned about GP appointments? Look at the austerity measures that have crippled the NHS, not the refugees. It’s years of budget cuts, not immigrants, causing the strain. Meanwhile, legal migrants are working tirelessly in our NHS, treating patients and saving lives. But let’s keep the fantasy alive that it’s all a migrant’s fault you can’t see a doctor.

Concerned about jobs and wages? Poor economic policies and corporate greed are to blame, not people fleeing war. Your low wages are thanks to CEOs focused on profits, not refugees. Legal migrants contribute significantly to our economy, working hard in essential sectors. But go ahead, keep blaming the people just trying to survive for your stagnant paycheck.

Concerned about crime? Studies show immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than native-born citizens. Blame systematic issues and social inequalities, not the innocent refugees. Many legal migrants are law-abiding citizens who positively contribute to our communities. But sure, let’s scapegoat those fleeing violence for our own social failings.

Concerned about cultural integration? Fear-mongering and exclusion create division. Integration is a two-way street. Newcomers want to fit in, but you’re too busy shouting at them to “come back to where they came from”. Legal migrants enrich our culture with their diverse perspectives and traditions. But by all means, let’s keep them out and then complain they’re not integrating.

Concerned about public services? Decades of underfunding and mismanagement by successive governments, not asylum seekers, are the problem. Public services are in shambles due to chronic underfunding, not a few thousand desperate souls. Legal migrants work in these very services, caring for our elderly, teaching our children, and maintaining our infrastructure. But yeah, it’s definitely the refugees’ fault your local school is underfunded.

Concerned about national security? Don’t buy into fear-mongering rhetoric. Most migrants are fleeing violence and contribute positively to our society. National security risks come from homegrown extremism and poor policies, not terrified refugees. Many legal migrants have served and continue to serve in our armed forces, protecting our freedoms. But keep clutching your pearls over the refugee family down the street.

Concerned about maintaining British values? A not so gentle reminder that British values include tolerance, diversity, and mutual respect. Attacking those seeking safety betrays these principles. Want to uphold British values? Practice the tolerance and decency we claim to stand for. But sure, let’s protect “British values” by abandoning them entirely. The far-right thugs and their suddenly mute leaders want to deflect from the real issues by pointing fingers at the most vulnerable. They want to sow division and distract from the real culprits – years of mismanagement and neglect by those in power. It’s time we put a hard stop to their narrative and start focusing on the actual problems that need solving. Let’s keep our eyes on the real issues and work together to build a fairer, more inclusive society. Enough with the scapegoating.

Have a good week.
