Increasing  visitors to Weymouth out of season is a major part of the BID’s Business Plan. Weymouth is the perfect destination for outdoor sports and activities, offering enthusiasts a large and diverse range of opportunities in and around the area.

Weymouth BID will be hosting a new event called the “BIG DORSET OUTDOOR WEEKEND” on 20th and 21st May 2017, the event will bring together over 25 outdoor activity and adventure events in south Dorset with a particular focus on Weymouth & Portland. Activities will include cycling, running, walking and a vast selection of water based activities. The Big Dorset Outdoor Weekend will be managed by Creative Solutions (MPE) Ltd on behalf of the Weymouth BID.

Nigel Reed, Manager of Weymouth BID, said “This area is a great place for adventure sports and with the market expanding; this is the right time to promote the area. It is important that we take advantage of the growing tourism market in health and well-being and continue to promote the wide range of activities available to residents and visitors all year round. ”

Organiser Roy Griffiths said  It is hoped that ‘The BIG Dorset Outdoor Weekend’ will inspire both local residents and visitors of all ages to either take part for the first time or enjoy their chosen activity in the fantastic outdoor playground we know as Weymouth & Portland. I have known for many years the health giving properties of taking part in an outdoor activity and it has been proven many times by experts to be one of the best ways to combat general and mental health issues – as well as being fun and a great way to meet other like-minded people.

Many of the local activity providers are more than happy to provide taster sessions throughout the year to give you the chance to have a go before committing to any particular activity, all equipment and specialist clothing is usually provided and expert advice is always on hand from a whole host of professional providers or activity club members. Everyone has to start somewhere, even our Olympians had to take their first steps at some point, and it has always been gratifying how generous people can be, who are proficient in their activity, with support and advice to beginners.

The timing of the ‘BIG Dorset Outdoor Weekend’ has been deliberately set at the beginning of the season to enable people to continue with your chosen activity or activities throughout the rest of the year. This can be seen nowadays from the many sporting events that take place in the borough right through the year including watersports, walking, cycling, and running events – you may even feel inspired enough to enter the IRONMAN 70.3 Triathlon in September”.

If you would like to take part in any of the activities please contact the activity provider via the website.
