The Dorset Badger Cull

The badger cull has been rolled out to this county and the killing zone is North Dorset in particular.

The target for number of badgers killed is at least 615 and as much as 835 badgers shot through either cage trapping or free shooting. The work is carried out via cull contractors and local farmers.  Free shooting has been scientifically proven to be inhumane, with badgers sometimes taking up to 5 minutes to die a painful and horrific death.  Cage trapped badgers also face a traumatic wait for their fate of being blasted to death by a shotgun at close range.

This has little to nothing to do with controlling bovine Tuberculosis. The cull is a political carrot given to farmers who want to remove the Protected status of badgers.  Removal of this status would open the door to green belt development and the proliferation of shooting estates.  Badgers predate the young pheasant poults released in their thousands by shooting estates every year.

The NFU would have you believe that a cull is a ‘tool in the box’ to tackling the problem of bTB and they don’t want you to know the truth. They’ll have you torn between the decimation of an ancient British specie and their tearful hand wringing over the premature destruction of a cow that was destined to be killed anyway.  They’ll cry poverty and hint at the potential disruption to your morning cup of tea if they can’t cull badgers. They’ll tell you they want ‘healthy badgers’ and ‘healthy cattle’ but neither will be achieved through a cull.

Most of the public are opposed to badger culling. The badger is being used as a scapegoat for slovenly farming practises and a costly distraction from developing a cattle vaccine against the disease.  Science has proved that a cull will have no meaningful effect on the bTB problem in this country.  Pro cull MPs will only hear anecdotes from those interested in eradicating badgers, but the cull has become a poisoned chalice with previous supporters such as the British Veterinary Association now willing to disassociate themselves with this expensive, shambolic and dishonest dirty business.

We actively oppose the cull and so can you.  If you disagree with corruption, lies and injustice, you can do something positive about it and join us in saving badgers in Dorset.  Any age and any ability can legally walk footpaths in the zone, disrupting potential shooters.  You can look for cages in fields and report their location to us.  You can join an organised patrol and send a clear message to big business and big money that you won’t have the wool pulled over your eyes and your intelligence insulted.

So stand up.  Help us out.  Badgers need you.
