The Frail Scottish Widow Who Defeated Donald Trump’s Bullying And Abuse

As Donald Trump prepares yet another self-congratulatory visit to Scotland—no doubt to ramble about his imaginary Scottish roots and the supposed success of his golf developments—it’s time we remembered a true Scottish hero. Not a wealthy politician, not a business tycoon, but a quiet, elderly woman who simply refused to be pushed around.

Her name was Molly Forbes.

Molly, a widow in her 90s, lived a quiet life on a modest plot of land in Balmedie, Aberdeenshire, a region of rolling dunes and coastal beauty. She and her son, Michael, lived in a simple farmhouse with a small amount of adjoining land. It wasn’t glamorous. It wasn’t grand. But it was home.

That peace was shattered when Donald Trump arrived in Scotland in the mid-2000s with dreams of building “the world’s greatest golf course.” Backed by empty promises of jobs, tourism, and international acclaim, Trump secured planning permission to develop an enormous luxury golf resort on the Menie Estate, adjacent to the Forbes property. But there was a problem: Molly’s home sat smack in the middle of where Trump envisioned luxury suites and sweeping fairways.

What followed was a campaign of intimidation and harassment that can only be described as disgraceful.

The Bullying Begins

When Trump’s team first approached Molly about purchasing her land, it was not a polite offer; it was a declaration. Trump wasn’t asking if she’d be open to negotiations. He was informing her that she would sell and that he would set the price.

Molly, with that particular brand of Scottish tenacity, refused.

Trump’s reaction was predictable. As with many who oppose him, he became hostile. During a phone call to Molly, which started out courteous, Trump soon turned aggressive when she again declined to sell. Molly later described him as “not right in the head” and an “overbearing bully.” He called her “crazy,” “senile,” and “not a very nice woman.”

But that was only the beginning.

Floodlights were installed near her home, beaming into her windows 24 hours a day. Heavy machinery was operated outside at all hours, including weekends. Her water supply was cut off, and the Trump organisation blamed a mysterious “accident.” Power was also cut after contractors reportedly severed a nearby cable. Molly and her son endured these conditions for years.

Trump’s employees repeatedly trespassed on her land. Boundaries were ignored. Privacy was violated. All part of a transparent campaign to make life so intolerable that the family would eventually give up and sell.

They didn’t.

International Attention, Local Outrage

Molly’s quiet battle drew international attention. Her son, Michael, was one of the most vocal critics of Trump’s project, and their story was featured in Anthony Baxter’s acclaimed documentary You’ve Been Trumped (2011). The film documented the environmental destruction, the bullying of local residents, and the deeply troubling relationship between Trump’s business and local authorities.

The Forbes family became reluctant symbols of resistance.

Molly herself wasn’t one for the spotlight. She simply wanted to live the rest of her life in peace, in the home she’d known for decades. But the conflict consumed her final years.

In interviews, Molly remained remarkably composed. “It’s not about the money,” she once said. “It’s about the principle. This is our home. We’ve done nothing wrong.”

She died in 2020 at the age of 96, never having sold her home, never backing down.

A Lasting Legacy

Trump never got the land. Despite years of pressure, legal battles, and public humiliation, Molly stood firm. The land remained in the family’s hands, a quiet rebuke to the idea that money and power always win.

As Trump continues to peddle fantasies about his love for Scotland and his so-called ancestral roots, Scots would do well to remember Molly. A true Scot. A woman of unshakeable conviction. A person who embodied more integrity and strength than any of the sycophants and yes-men that usually surround Trump.

While Trump surrounds himself with heavily armed guards, orchestrates intimidation campaigns, and flies in bombers to impress, Molly needed none of that.

Just one weathered frown, a strong will, and the quiet certainty of someone who knows right from wrong.

She stood at the front door of her farmhouse—92 years old, grey-haired, and barely five feet tall—and looked the most powerful bully in the world squarely in the face.

She didn’t need to raise her voice. She didn’t need a press conference. That frown said it all.

“Go fuck yourself.”
