The Dolphin Shopping Centre in Poole is preparing for a visit from the Mayor of Poole and the High Sheriff of Poole on Armistice Day, Saturday November 11.
The Mayor of Poole, Lindsay Wilson and the High Sheriff of Poole, Sean Gabriel, will visit the centre together to commemorate Armistice Day. The Mayor’s Chaplain will do a short introduction and lead some prayers before the two minutes silence begins at 11am. This will be held in the Plaza near Starbucks at the shopping centre. The Mayor and Sheriff will then walk through the centre to Falkland Square to lay a wreath at the War Memorial.
The War Memorial can be found in Falkland Square which commemorates the Poole-based Special Boat Service, which was the first unit to be dispatched to the Falkland Islands in 1982.
On Saturday November 11, The Royal British Legion will be at the Dolphin Shopping Centre selling poppies, to give money to the service women and men whose lives have been changed by war. There will also be a Royal Marine bugler and VIP guests to witness the wreath being laid at the War Memorial in Falkland Square.
John Grinnell, centre manager at the Dolphin Shopping Centre, said: “We are delighted to welcome both the Mayor of Poole and the High Sheriff of Poole to the centre to commemorate Armistice Day. We invite members of the public to join what is set to be a very important moment for Poole with the laying of the wreath at the War Memorial.”
Armistice Day is celebrated annually on November 11 to mark the day the armistice was signed between the Allies and Germany that brought the end of WWI. The armistice took place on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month back in 1918, which is why the shopping centre will mark this with a two minutes silence at 11am on Saturday November 11, ahead of Remembrance Sunday.
