Pulverize the homes and grind up the skulls of the buried inhabitants to build the foundations of the next Israeli suburb. Formerly Gaza, soon to be beachside apartments for Israelis. How long will the stench of bodies linger?
But this war has two fronts. In the West Bank, Greater Israel is being built by land grab after land grab. Shoot any farmers that resist. That was the strategy in 1948. It worked then, and it is working again now.
In 1948, Europe did not want millions of Jews reclaiming their homes after the Holocaust and, as a Jew, would you want to return to the scene of the crime, where neighbours often betrayed you and took all your furniture and possessions? Could you ever return to the town where the local police force had arrested you and your family and loaded you all onto a train wagon headed for Poland?
America and Britain turned away most refugees during and after the war. They wanted them gone, as far away as possible. Lord Balfour’s WW1-era promissory note to help create a state in Palestine for Jews in exchange for help in that war fitted the bill. But trying to police this postwar landgrab in the Holy Land was difficult for the British, who controlled Palestine. Too many British soldiers were being blown up or shot by the Irgun, the Stern Gang, and other ruthless pioneers of the Israeli state.

Driving millions of Palestinians out of their farms, villages, and towns through terror was the first step. The Nakba, as Arabs call it (the Catastrophe). The Second Nakba, happening now, is even more brutal. Gaza and its people, its culture, its history, and very existence are being erased. Its destruction is even airbrushed from our news feed. Only those with a strong stomach will witness it live on social media or on Al Jazeera—once the only news broadcaster left that still reports each fresh massacre and atrocity. But Al Jazeera is no longer on Freeview, so we are left with GB News propaganda but no televised reporting of our tax-payer-funded genocide.
In the Second World War, people in Britain and America heard rumours of pogroms and death camps but did not see the grisly reality until after Nazi Germany’s defeat. ‘Ethnic cleansing’ in 2024 can be viewed in real time on your smart phone in the bath before breakfast. Drone footage of children being shot amongst the rubble of North Gaza makes the London Blitz, or Berlin in 1945, seem second league. An Instagrammed re-enactment of the destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto carried out by the grandchildren of the few survivors of European genocide. This trauma will be passed on, politically turbocharged by European guilt.
In the comfort of our centrally heated homes, there is no plausible deniability of the scale of the crimes. Many of the cruelties of destroying Gaza are proudly recorded by IDF soldiers: the dynamiting of huge apartment blocks, the torture and humiliation of Palestinians, the destruction of everything that makes living possible—hospitals, schools, shops, mosques and churches, homes, water and electricity infrastructure.
