The Shein conversation could use a bit of shame

I’ve been over on Twitter so much recently and even before a recent Channel 4 expose revealed that Shein remains the worst (one day off a month for garment workers, half a day wages docked for simple mistakes, paid 3p per a piece sometimes working until 2 and 3 in the morning only to start again at 8am …. I’m at an age where I can’t get by on 5 hoursof sleep and consider it a form of torture, so I cannot imagine how gruelling this schedule is).

But I’m becoming increasingly uncomfortable with how angry people get with the idea that they should feel anything but happiness and joy over their decisions to willfully participate in harm done to others ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY DON’T HAVE TO.

Heard a lot of “you just don’t want poor people to have nice things” on Twitter and I don’t see how lead filled clothes which come at an expense to other humans can possibly be considered “nice”. I don’t get it. And I never will. People legit acting like spending more money timeand energy researching your clothes and seeking out better options is on par with the same oppression as the person working 14 hour days to make £3.50. I’m a bit disgusted by it. The ducking and dodging of
accountability. I’m sure this post will earn me some hate but it’s true.

This fast fashion conversation is going the same way as the climate convo often does when somehow nobody is at fault. I watch a lot of Shein haul videos on TikTok. Some of them are filmed in mansions. You can tell by just watching some of the other content.

I still think shame has an important place in our society. No we don’t shame actual poor people. But it’s time for all of us to get on the same page in realizing that that poor person isn’t the person who earned Shein $15 billion in profits.

Some of the breathless defense of Shein shopping make me lose my hope in humanity. If hearing about this stuff only inspires you to scream “how dare you shame me”, I’d argue you probably need a bit more shame and humanity in your life.
