Jonathan Pie sums it up again.

The Sun and why it is scum:

  1. “Hillsborough Disaster” – The Sun faced immense controversy for its coverage of the 1989 Hillsborough stadium disaster, where 96 Liverpool football fans tragically lost their lives. The newspaper published a front-page article titled “The Truth” which contained false claims and blamed the fans for the incident, causing widespread outrage and leading to a longstanding boycott of the newspaper in Liverpool.
  2. “Page 3 Girls” – The Sun’s long-standing practice of featuring topless women on Page 3 sparked significant debate and criticism regarding sexism and objectification. Many argued that it perpetuated harmful stereotypes and objectified women, leading to campaigns and calls for the newspaper to end the practice, which eventually occurred in 2015.
  3. “Freddie Starr Ate My Hamster” – In 1986, The Sun published a headline claiming that comedian Freddie Starr had eaten a live hamster. The story caused a media frenzy, but it later emerged that the incident was fabricated, leading to significant controversy and damage to the newspaper’s reputation.
  4. “Muslim ‘Gatecrashers'” – The Sun faced backlash in 2017 for an article titled “1 in 5 Brit Muslims’ sympathy for jihadis,” which claimed that one in five British Muslims sympathised with jihadists. The article was widely criticised for its misleading representation of survey data, and the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) upheld complaints against the newspaper.
  5. “The Queen Is a Lizard” – In 2016, The Sun published a story about a video that allegedly showed Queen Elizabeth II “shape-shifting” into a lizard. The story was widely ridiculed and criticised for promoting baseless conspiracy theories, tarnishing the newspaper’s credibility.
  6. “Topless Photos of Prince Harry” – In 2012, The Sun published nude photos of Prince Harry taken during a private party in Las Vegas. The decision to publish the photos without the Prince’s consent caused a considerable controversy, leading to debates about privacy and media ethics.
  7. “Gordon Brown’s Son Has Cystic Fibrosis” – The Sun faced criticism in 2006 for revealing that former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s son had cystic fibrosis without the family’s consent. The story was widely condemned for invading the privacy of a young child and exploiting personal health information for political gain.
  8. “Maddy McCann Disappearance” – The Sun’s coverage of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in 2007 drew significant controversy. The newspaper ran numerous stories speculating on the case, sometimes featuring sensationalist headlines and unfounded claims, which led to accusations of biased reporting and interference with the investigation.
  9. “EC President Threat to UK” – In 2016, The Sun published a controversial headline claiming that European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker was threatening to “ravage” the UK for voting to leave the European Union. The headline was widely criticised for its sensationalism and misleading interpretation of Juncker’s statements.
  10. “Migrants and ‘Cockroaches'” – The Sun faced widespread condemnation in 2015 for an article titled “Rescue boats? I’d use gunships to stop migrants,” in which columnist Katie Hopkins referred to migrants as “cockroaches” and advocated for violent measures to prevent their arrival. The article was accused of promoting hate speech and dehumanising language.
