The USA: The Democracy That Never Was

No matter what your opinions of Trump or Clinton one thing is a fact. The one with the most votes lost and the one with the least votes won. Electoral college or not this is US democracy for you. The one that they spend hundreds of billions of dollars trying to convince others to adopt by infiltrating; corrupting and warring with.  Now call me Mr Picky but is there anyone who doesn’t have a problem with this?

Imagine, if following the referendum, we found out that we were staying in the EU even though 52% of the turnout voted to Leave or vice versa. Imagine then that we went around the world telling everyone what a super system we had and that everyone else should have it too. Or else.

The stragglers have got it now.

Here is the data:

US election data 2016:

231,556,622 were eligible to vote.

46.9% did not vote.

25.6% voted for Hilary Clinton.

25.5% voted for Donald Trump

Other – 2%

“They talk about why people voted for Trump despite the fact that the actual number of people voting Republican remained roughly the same as in 2012. It was previous Democrat voters not voting that won Trump the election.

They talk about the poor voting for Trump, when the exit polls show that Clinton won a majority of voters earning less than $50,000 a year. What happened was that the poor in the rust belt didn’t bother to vote. They turned out for Obama because he offered them hope. But he failed to deliver and all Clinton could offer was the fact that she wasn’t Trump….” Rui You Kong

All this commentary about white working class voters all turning out for Trump turns out to be yet more mainstream crap. Across the board Clinton attracted more under $50000 incomes that Trump did. Perhaps Clinton attracted more black voters but it does not require a non bigot mindset to work out that one.

In this country the vulnerable are being attacked by a government with less than 25% of the popular vote but at least that party got more votes than any other party. Many of us may hate the Tories and their lack of empathy and compassion and we may hate a voting system in which many millions of votes are effectively wasted but at least they can claim to have won more voters over to their message. The USA cannot. Their system is a sham and with nearly 50% not turning out it is very sad indictment on both them and their victims.
