The ugly scenes in Thetford should leave nobody in any doubt about where anti-immigrant hatred leads when it is allowed to fester. After two nights of disorder, homes were attacked, people feared for their safety, and police officers trying to restore order became targets themselves. One female officer was reportedly seriously bitten, while another was struck by a rock. That is not protest. It is mob violence.
Everyone has the right to express concerns about immigration policy. In a democracy, people are entitled to argue for stricter border controls, different asylum policies or changes to migration levels. What nobody has the right to do is intimidate families, smash windows, attempt to force entry into homes or assault police officers carrying out their duties.
The disorder reportedly followed rumours that homes in the town were being used to accommodate asylum seekers. Whether those rumours were true or not is almost beside the point. Once people convince themselves that migrants are the source of every social problem, facts become secondary to anger. Innocent people become targets simply because of who they are, or who a crowd believes they might be.
This is exactly how extremist politics operates. It encourages suspicion instead of evidence, scapegoats instead of solutions, and outrage instead of reasoned debate. The result is all too often intimidation, criminal damage and violence.
The anti-immigration demonstration outside the police station was described as largely peaceful. That distinction matters. Peaceful protest is a democratic right and should always be protected. But the events that followed were something entirely different. Attempting to break into homes, vandalising property and attacking officers crosses every conceivable line.
Those responsible cannot hide behind slogans about “protecting Britain” or “defending communities”. Communities are not defended by terrorising neighbours. Britain is not made stronger by mobs deciding who deserves to live in a street based on rumour or prejudice.
The police deserve support for their response. Officers placed themselves between an angry crowd and vulnerable residents, suffering injuries in the process. Nobody joins the police expecting to be bitten or pelted with rocks simply for preventing violence.
Politicians and commentators also have responsibilities. Public figures who repeatedly portray asylum seekers as invaders, criminals or existential threats may not be responsible for every violent act, but inflammatory rhetoric can contribute to an atmosphere in which extremists feel emboldened. Words have consequences, especially when they dehumanise already vulnerable groups.
The vast majority of people, whatever their views on immigration, reject violence outright. They understand that political disagreements are settled through elections, debate and the rule of law—not through intimidation.
Thetford should serve as a warning. When fear is weaponised and prejudice is encouraged, the victims are not just migrants or asylum seekers. Local residents suffer, police officers are assaulted, public resources are stretched, and communities become divided. Those who carried out these attacks did not stand up for Britain. They disgraced it.
