Reform UK deputy leader Lee Anderson found himself at the centre of a social media storm after a live television interview in which he attempted to defend the party’s controversial “Operation Fortress” plan to tackle small boat crossings in the English Channel.
The proposal, unveiled by Reform UK, calls for the Royal Navy to intercept migrant boats in the Channel and escort them back to French or Belgian ports. The party argues that such a policy would act as a powerful deterrent, save lives by discouraging dangerous crossings, and dramatically reduce the cost to the taxpayer of housing asylum seekers.
However, critics say the plan has a fundamental flaw: it relies on the cooperation of France and Belgium, neither of whom have shown any willingness to participate.
During the interview, Anderson was repeatedly challenged on how the policy could actually work in practice. When asked what would happen if French authorities simply refused to accept boats being escorted back into their waters or ports, Anderson struggled to provide a clear explanation.
