The Metropolitan Police has closed its investigation into allegations of rape and sexual assault against Conservative MP Andrew Rosindell. Representing Romford, Mr. Rosindell, who has not participated in House of Commons votes since May 2022, when the accusations surfaced, faced charges including indecent assault, sexual assault, rape, abuse of position of trust, and misconduct in public office.
After an extensive inquiry, the police stated that there was insufficient evidence to proceed with prosecution. A spokesperson for the force explained that the investigation, initiated in January 2020 following a report of alleged sexual offenses between 2002 and 2009 in London, led to the arrest of a man in his 50s (presumably Mr. Rosindell) in May 2022. However, detectives concluded that the evidence did not meet the criteria set by Crown Prosecutors.
In response to the investigation’s closure, a statement from Mr. Rosindell’s office declared his complete exoneration. It emphasized that the Metropolitan Police’s thorough examination determined that there was no case to answer and that no further action would be taken. Mr. Rosindell’s office also highlighted his continuous dedication to serving Romford over the past twenty-one months and his commitment to advocating for the people of his hometown as their local MP.
