An investigation is underway after the body of a man was recovered from the water at Weymouth Harbour on Friday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 4pm following reports that a man had been found deceased in the harbour. Police officers, Coastguard rescue teams, specialist divers and forensic investigators all attended as authorities began examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
A police cordon was established around the slipway off Commercial Road, adjacent to Cosens Quay Car Park. The area, commonly used for vehicle and trailer parking as well as launching boats into the harbour, remained closed for several hours while investigators carried out detailed examinations.
The Coastguard confirmed it was assisting Dorset Police during the operation as emergency personnel worked at the scene.
A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: “Dorset Police received a report at 3.52pm on Friday, June 26, that a man had been found deceased in the water at Weymouth Harbour.
“Emergency services attended and a cordon was put in place for a full examination of the scene to take place.
“Detectives are carrying out a full investigation into the incident to establish what has happened.”
At this stage, police have not released any information regarding the man’s identity or the circumstances leading to his death. Officers are continuing enquiries to determine the events surrounding the incident, and no further details have been made public.
The discovery prompted a significant emergency response and attracted the attention of members of the public in the busy harbour area, with access to part of the waterfront restricted while investigations continued.
