Tragedy as missing Thomas’ body found

A body has very sadly been found in the search for missing man Thomas Gatfield from Portland.

Dorset Police received a report at 10.39pm on Thursday 23 July 2020 raising concern for the welfare of the 34-year-old man after he was in mobile phone contact with family and friends and seemed very upset.

Extensive searches were carried out to try and locate Thomas, assisted by HM Coastguard, the NPAS helicopter and Dorset Search and Rescue (DorSAR).

Very sadly, at around 10.20am on Sunday 26 July 2020 a body of a man was located on Portland.

While the body is yet to be formally identified, it is believed to be that of Thomas. His family has been informed and is being supported by officers. The death is not being treated as suspicious.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Bell, of Dorset Police, said: “Our thoughts are with Thomas’ family and friends at this extremely difficult time.

“We would like to thank all agencies involved in the searches and everyone who shared our appeals.”
