On January 29, 2025, a tragic mid-air collision occurred near Washington, D.C., involving American Airlines Flight 5342 and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter. The accident resulted in the deaths of all 67 individuals on board both aircraft.
In the aftermath, President Donald Trump attributed the disaster to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives within the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He claimed that the FAA’s focus on recruiting individuals with various disabilities under DEI programs compromised safety. Trump stated, “The FAA is actively recruiting workers who suffer severe intellectual disabilities, psychiatric problems, and other mental and physical conditions under a diversity and inclusion hiring initiative.”
However, critics argue that recent actions by the Trump administration may have contributed to the conditions leading to the crash. Notably, just days before the incident, the administration dismissed all members of the Federal Aviation Security Advisory Committee. This committee, established after the 1988 Pan Am Flight 103 bombing, played a crucial role in enhancing aviation safety by providing recommendations and oversight. The removal of its members has been described as a reckless decision that could hinder future safety advancements.
Additionally, the Trump administration implemented a federal hiring freeze, which affected the FAA and led to understaffing in critical areas such as air traffic control. The resignation of FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker on January 21, 2025, under pressure from Elon Musk, left the agency without a leader during a critical period.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticised Trump’s focus on DEI as a diversion from these administrative decisions. She highlighted the dismissal of the Aviation Security Advisory Committee and the buyout offers to air traffic controllers, stating, “It’s not DEI—it’s him. And Elon too.”
While the exact causes of the crash are still under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), these administrative actions have raised concerns about their potential impact on aviation safety. Experts caution against attributing the disaster to DEI initiatives without evidence, emphasising the importance of a thorough investigation to determine the factors that led to this tragedy.
