Porsche 911 964 Restoration Project

Turbo Dynamics recently received a historic turbocharger belonging to the legendary Porsche 964. The vehicle that the unit belonged to had not been fired up in 23 years, but the owner recently decided to get motor back on the road – and the team at Turbo Dynamics couldn’t be more excited!

The owner appointed the leading Porsche specialists at Porsche Centre Cardiff to assist with the revival and to carry out all of the necessary mechanical checks, which are paramount with a project of this kind. Turbo Dynamics were then appointed to fully inspect and overhaul the vehicle’s turbocharger, which was still the original unit installed on the production line by the manufacturer over two decades ago!

The turbocharger was a BorgWarner K27 unit that had no doubt seen more than its fair share of hot shut downs! This is a common problem turbos that have not been allowed to cool properly which results in premature wear because of a loss in oil pressure. Luckily the damage in this instance was not detrimental and the skilled precision engineers at Turbo Dynamics were able to fully overhaul and restore the unit.

James Young, Technical Technician at Turbo Dynamics has commented: “On-going turbo care is imperative to prolong the life of any turbocharger, but is fundamentally important when dealing with historic units of this kind. For this reason we always recommend regular servicing, optimal filtration and allowing a cool down period.

As giant Porsche fans the team at Turbo Dynamics were delighted to be a part of this revival project, and this model has always been a favourite of mine! The unit is now back with the team at the Porsche Centre Cardiff and we cannot wait to hear the finished results!”
