Bournemouth’s Turnaround Families programme has been successful in turning around 100 per cent of their government target of 370 families.
The programmehas helped these families to experience improvements in education, a reduction in criminal and anti-social behaviour and to find employment or make progress towards finding work.
It means that Bournemouth Council becomes the first local authority in the region to have turned around the lives of 100 per cent of their government target and has secured their position in the elite group of Local Authorities.
Launched by central government in 2011, the troubled families programme was set up to help familieswith multiple problems, including families with mental and physical health problems, those affected by domestic violence and with vulnerable children.
In that time the Council and their partners have been working closely with the families in a multitude of ways to ensure that they sustain success in getting adults back to work and supporting them to keep their jobs. Children are now increasing and sustaining their attendance in education and both crime and anti-social behaviour are reduced.
Councillor Jane Kelly, portfolio holder for partnerships and regeneration, said:
“This is great news andI am extremely pleased that we have been able to reach so many families and support them in turning their lives around.
“By effectively working with these families we have supported them through a positive change and improvement in their quality of life. We are confident that as we move into phase two of the government’s programme, the numbers whose lives have been improved will continue to rise.”
Bournemouth will now prepare for phase two of the government’s Troubled Families programme and expect to work closely with even more families on a much wider range of challenges in the coming years.
