Young people who want to take part in the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh (DoE) Awards scheme are being given a helping hand from Weymouth Town Council.

From today (Monday 4th October), the town council is making £10,000 available to DoE coordinators based in the area. This includes schools, colleges, and activity centres who will be able to apply for a share of the cash to help with the costs of buying equipment and running training sessions.

Young people will benefit from being able to take part in outdoor activities including mountain biking, rowing, walking and water-based sports which count towards a bronze, silver or gold DoE award.

Weymouth Town Council Mayor, Cllr Colin Huckle, said: “Following the death of HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, Weymouth Town Council wanted to do something to help commemorate his life and create a legacy that would allow more young people in Weymouth to take a DoE award.

“Funding of up to £10,000 is now available and we are inviting DoE coordinators to apply for a maximum of £1,000 towards their group. Funding would be particularly helpful for young people who come from low-income households where the cost of clothing and equipment could be a barrier to individuals being able to take part in the scheme.”

Applications can be made between Monday 4th October and Monday 15th November. For full details including the funding policy and an application form visit Weymouth Town Council’s website at www.weymouthtowncouncil.gov.uk/grants-available-for-local-organisations/

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is the world’s leading youth achievement award for 14 to 24-year-olds, with over 438,000 young people currently doing their DofE in the UK.
