Verne immigration centre update

Dear All,

Whilst wary of overloading you all with news on The Verne, this is just a quick update on the situation following Tamsin’s outline a few weeks ago.

Firstly, as I am sure you are all aware, The Verne started taking immigration detainees from the 24th March, albeit in a slightly unexpected guise – under HMP. Given the Government’s decision (at the very last minute) to continue to operate the centre as a prison, those held inside will be even more isolated than we first thought. Treated exactly the same way as those held within the prison estate, they will have no access to telephones or internet, limited access to social visits and legal services, and no Rule 35.

With this in mind, our workshops there are going to be even more important as a way of reaching out to, and supporting, those inside. We have managed to arrange our first workshop in The Verne for just after Easter, and we are extremely keen to get as many volunteers as possible involved over the next couple of months. If you would like to know more about how you can participate, please get in touch with Tamsin at [email protected].

In regard our campaign to end indefinite detention, things are are hotting after an amendment was tabled during the Immigration Bill’s reporting stage, calling for a time limit of 60 days. Whilst the amendment itself was rejected by the House, it’s clear there is real impetus for significant change around this issue, across the political spectrum. Keep an eye on our campaigns page for more details of how you can get involved – https://detentionaction.org.uk/timelimit.

In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

Best wishes,

Ben (The new Campaigns and Communications Officer)
