Dorset Wildlife Trust’s (DWT’s) Lorton Meadows Conservation Centre in Weymouth is looking for volunteers to help run its events and education programme.

There will be a volunteer open day on 26th May at 12pm.  Visitors are invited to come and meet the team, find out more about the reserve and see how they can get involved.

The Conservation Centre, which is surrounded with 75 hectares of grassland, woodland and hedgerows, is just a stone’s throw from the residential areas of Littlemoor, Upwey and Weymouth, and provides a tranquil and peaceful greenspace for wildlife to thrive in and people to enjoy.  The nature reserve also forms part of the Lorton Valley Nature Park, launched in 2013.

DWT’s Seasonal Assistant for Lorton Meadows Conservation Centre, Vicky Ashby says, “Lorton Meadows is a fantastic nature reserve tucked away on the outskirts of Weymouth.  We run a programme of events for schools and the public, as well as a visitors centre, where we have just extended the opening hours.  We are looking for volunteers of all ages and backgrounds to help us throughout the year. In return we can offer a fulfilling and interesting role, a beautiful location, and lots of opportunities to meet new people.”

Pat has been volunteering with DWT for 4 years at Lorton Meadows and the Chesil Beach Centre.  He says, “Volunteering has given me great enjoyment within the natural environment. Lorton Meadows has been my prime location, and I enjoy welcoming all ages from kids’ events to adults guided walks, set in several habitats in a well-managed visitor centre.  I like being about to give something back to nature and really enjoy learning about it, gaining knowledge from staff and visitors alike.”

Wildlife knowledge is not necessary and full training will be provided.  If you’d like to drop in for a chat with staff and other volunteers, please come by on Thursday 26thMay at 12pm.  They can talk to you about what the volunteering entails, discuss the reserve, provide refreshments and take you on a guided walk around the reserve.

If you have any questions, please contact Vicky Ashby at [email protected] or phone 01305 816546.
