Harry Peterson, aged 18 from Weymouth has decided that it’s a “legal life for him” after completing a four week scholarship at Battens, solicitors, a place funded by the Weymouth & Portland Chamber of Commerce and the Centre of Excellence for Industrial Liaison at Budmouth College.
The scholarship is part of the Samuel Mico Scholarship programme but this particular placement is funded entirely by the Weymouth & Portland Chamber of Commerce. Cherise Luke Bennett of Battens, solicitors and a member of the Chamber Executive Committee said “It has been a pleasure working with Harry and we will be continuing to support him as his studies develop. At Battens we literally “grow” our own team by encouraging work based learning, apprenticeships, paid work experience and welcome graduates into the business. I would like to thank the Chamber and Budmouth for giving Harry the opportunity of working with us at Battens.”
Harry studied at Wey Valley School before joining Weymouth College with the intention of developing a career in the Royal Marines. During the final weeks of his course, Harry decided that he would rather pursue a career in the legal profession so applied to study A levels at Budmouth College. Next month Harry will start on his final year at Budmouth College where he is currently studying at A level in Law, Sociology, Business economics, Government & Politics and English language.
Harry Peterson said “ I would like to say a massive thanks to the Chamber and Battens for giving me this opportunity and to gain the experience that many other students do not have. It has really helped me to get a head start and a way to express my commitment to a career in Law. It is very important that you display something extra on your CV to help you demonstrate your skills and ability to employers and Universities.”
Whilst at Battens, Harry worked in Yeovil, Weymouth and Dorchester offices of Battens and gained experience in residential property, family law, dispute resolution, corporate law and mediation. Harry also helped at the Law Free advice clinic in Wareham each Monday.
The Weymouth & Portland Chamber of Commerce arranges a monthly business breakfast where over 70 businesses regularly attend. At each breakfast speakers are invited to address the business audience. On 1 September, Mark Excell of Websites by Mark, will be talking about search engine optimisation and the event I sponsored by the Centre of Excellence for Industrial Liaison at Budmouth College (CEIL).
Michelle Hind, President of the Weymouth & Portland Chamber of Commerce said “We are looking forward to hearing from Jurassica to see how their lottery application is progressing and then how planning and development of the project will take place. Breakfast guests will also get the chance to view the Virtual Tour of the proposed Jurassica site which has been produced by Chamber member Luke Woods.”
