Weymouth councillor outlines why she will not become Mayor

This Wednesday will be my last day as Deputy Mayor of Weymouth.

At Full Council we will elect a new Mayor and Deputy Mayor. I do not intend to be Mayor.

In my view the Mayoral role is about connecting people, giving people hope, leading the way and giving a good example of what Weymouth Town Council is about. It’s a role that should be taken seriously and with residents always in mind.

I have a long list of reasons why I won’t be Mayor this year. Here are some of them.

Work / Life balance – I am working and Dexter is still young enough to need a mum. I want to be as present as possible for Dexter.

Affordability – I cannot technically afford the role of Mayor and I think this will need to be reviewed. I would need a lot of childcare (at £10 an hour), the Mayor is expected to travel across Dorset for Civic engagements. During a cost of living crisis and climate crisis. This does not sit well with me. If anything at present the role only highlights those who can afford and those who can’t and seems extravagant.

Tradition / Christianity – If I were in a Mayoral role I would have wanted to move away from traditions. Especially around the lack of inclusivity for those who are of different faiths or non-believers. That would have taken a lot of time and engagement to plan. Time I don’t have spare at this time.

I hope that whoever is the next Mayor will maybe consider some of these changes and make the role something that’s accessible and representative of everyone.
