Officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward as they investigate a report of sexual assault on a bus in Portland.

It was reported that at around 6pm on Wednesday 13 December 2023 a 14-year-old girl was travelling on a bus, believed to be the number one First bus, from Wyke Regis toward Portland.

A man who was sitting next to her reportedly engaged her in conversation, before touching her inappropriately over her clothing.

The girl moved seats away from the man and he is reported to have got off the bus in the area of Fortuneswell.

Following enquiries, a 42-year-old Weymouth man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault.

Sergeant Dave Ash, of Weymouth and Portland police, said: “We are continuing to investigate this incident and I am keen to hear from any passengers on the bus who may have seen what happened, or anyone else with information that might assist our investigation.

“In particular, I would like to speak to an older man who I understand was sitting close to the girl involved and may have heard the conversation that took place between her and the man.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Dorset Police at www.dorset.police.uk or by calling 101, quoting occurrence number 55230195396. Alternatively, independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously online at Crimestoppers-uk.org or by calling Freephone 0800 555 111.
