Weymouth Man Charged With GBH With Intent Following Serious Injury on Weymouth Esplanade

A man is due to appear in court following a serious road traffic collision in Weymouth that left a teenage cyclist with life-changing injuries.

Officers from Dorset Police were called at 5.26pm on Thursday 10 April 2025 to reports of a collision involving a van and a cyclist on The Esplanade, close to the town’s landmark Jubilee Clock Tower.

Emergency services attended the scene and the cyclist, a teenage boy, was treated by paramedics before being airlifted to hospital by air ambulance. Police confirmed the youngster had sustained serious and life-changing injuries as a result of the incident.

The Esplanade, which runs alongside Weymouth’s seafront, is one of the town’s busiest routes, particularly during the spring and summer months when both vehicle traffic and cyclists make frequent use of the road. The incident prompted an immediate response from emergency crews, with the area temporarily affected while responders dealt with the situation and initial enquiries were carried out.

A 34-year-old man from Weymouth was arrested at the scene following the collision. Officers conducted a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, gathering evidence and reviewing the events leading up to the crash.

Following those enquiries, police have confirmed that the man has now been issued with a postal requisition. He is due to appear before Weymouth Magistrates’ Court on Friday 20 March 2026.

He will face a charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent in connection with the collision.

The charge comes after months of investigative work by officers examining the evidence surrounding the crash and the events that led to the teenage cyclist’s severe injuries.

Police have not released further details about the circumstances of the collision or the condition of the injured cyclist, but the case is expected to be addressed when the matter is brought before magistrates later this month.

Road safety campaigners have frequently highlighted the vulnerability of cyclists on busy coastal routes such as Weymouth’s seafront, where pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles share space along one of the town’s most popular stretches.
