Why Staying Home Could Hand Our Communities to Racist Reform UK Limited

In the next few weeks, what happens in our towns, villages and local communities may shape far more than many people realise.

These council elections are not simply about bins, roads and local services. They are about the values that will define our communities and the kind of country we want to live in. At the heart of this moment is a stark warning: parties like Reform are counting on one thing above all else — people staying at home.

They are relying on disillusionment, exhaustion and apathy. They are hoping that those who reject division, prejudice and the toxic politics of fear will simply switch off and assume somebody else will do the work. History has shown time and again that when decent people disengage, the loudest and most extreme voices are given room to grow.

The truth is that Reform’s support is often softer than it appears. It can look formidable in headlines and opinion polls, but local elections are often decided by narrow margins and turnout can make all the difference. A handful of conversations on a doorstep, a few streets leafleted, or a small group helping remind neighbours to vote can shift the result in a close ward.

That is why local organisation matters so much.

This is not about grand gestures or devoting every waking hour to politics. Change often begins with small acts of commitment. Bringing together a few people to leaflet for an hour, helping coordinate a short local session, or simply encouraging friends and neighbours not to sit this one out can have a real impact.

Most importantly, it sends a message that our communities will not be defined by racism, scapegoating and division.

If you have felt anger, concern or frustration at the direction some voices are trying to take this country, this is the moment to turn that feeling into action. Democracy does not protect itself. It depends on ordinary people choosing to participate.

The coming weeks will matter. Reform UK Limited are hoping their opponents stay silent. They are hoping people stay home.

We cannot afford to give them that victory.

If you have ever thought about getting more involved, now is the time. Even sixty to ninety minutes of your time could help protect the values of fairness, decency and inclusion in your local area.

This moment belongs to all of us. Let’s not leave it to chance.
