Wild half term events with Dorset Wildlife Trust

This October half term, Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) has some spooky wild events to get children out into nature at our visitor centres and nature reserves in Dorset.
 
The Kingcombe Centre is getting into the swing of Halloween with its ‘Spooky stories and Scary Bats’ event on Tuesday 23rd October from 6 – 8pm. Enjoy spooky stories around the log fire with professional story teller, Martin Maudsley before venturing outside to the meadows looking for weird and wonderful night time flyers, including ghostly moths and goulish bats! £6 per child, £4 per adult, includes hot dogs. Also on Tuesday 23rd October, join us for Forest School Fun from 10am – 12pm at Upton Country Park. There will be great nature-inspired activities for children from 5-11 years old, set in the wonderful woodland environment in the Park, just outside of Poole. £5 per child. At the Fine Foundation Chesil Beach Centre, come along and get active with animal yoga for kids on Wednesday 24th October from 2pm – 2.45pm. Children can learn the different wildlife positions including the grey heron, the adder and the toad! £2 per child.
 
For a water-themed event, visit the Fine Foundation Wild Seas Centre in Kimmeridge for the ‘Creatures of the deep, dark ocean’ on Wednesday 24th October from 11am – 4pm. Find out about the bizarre and creepy creatures that live in the dark depths of the ocean such as the vampire squid, hatchet fish and dragon fish! Learn about their lives and make one to take home with you. £2.50 per child. Toll road charges of £5 apply. Phone 01929 481044 for more information.
 
Over on Brownsea Island, it’s not just the red squirrels scampering about and having fun. Every day during the holiday’s from 11am – 3pm join the Brownsea team for some art and craft activities. Make a pine cone bird feeder and take part in wildlife quizzes. There will also be ‘bird bingo’ and ‘wildlife explorers’ self-led trails available for all the family. The Lorton Meadows Conservation Centre in Weymouth is running its ‘Spooky Spiders and Baffling Bats’ event on Friday 26th October from 10.30am – 12.30pm. Discover the secret life of bats and other spooky Halloween creatures and make bouncing bats and wonderful webs to take home. Children £3, must be accompanied. Booking essential on 01305 816546.
