To celebrate the theme of ‘record breakers’ in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) is launching a new family trail on Brownsea Island and a new challenge for children to complete whilst spending some wild time in Dorset.

Super Squirrel’s record-breakers trail is being launched at Dorset Wildlife Trust’s nature reserve on Brownsea Island this week for the summer holidays.  Families can spend time learning about the record-breaking wildlife the island is home to, take part in craft sessions, quizzes and learn more about the wildlife that calls the reserve’s internationally important lagoon home, in our ‘guide in the hide’ drop-in sessions.

Children can also earn a special ‘reserve rambler’ badge over the summer by taking part in DWT’s reserve-hopping challenge, and visiting five of the visitor centres* across Dorset tocollect stamps and write down a record-breaking or jaw-dropping wildlife fact they have learnt at each centre.  Those who complete the challenge will be entered into a free prize draw** to win wildlife goodies, including books and equipment to help kids go wild!

DWT’s Brownsea Island Engagement Officer, Emma Godden said, “What’s great about this challenge is that it’s easily achievable.  We have lots of events in all our visitor centre’s this summer, and plenty to keep kids and adults alike entertained – just remember to get your stamp to earn your reserve rambler badge whilst you’re out and about in Dorset!”

Brownsea Island is open 10am – 5pm Monday – Sunday throughout the summer. DWT members do not have to pay a landing fee on arrival at Brownsea Island if visiting the DWT nature reserve. A valid membership card will need to be shown on arrival, and if visiting the rest of the island, National Trust charges apply.  For non-members, charges apply and entrance to the reserve is: adults £2, children 12-18 £1 and children under 12 go free.  For information about boat times, phone 01202 709445.

Dorset Wildlife Trust manages 101 ha (256 acres) of Brownsea Island and works with the National Trust in partnership to ensure the Island is managed for the benefit of wildlife and enjoyment of people.
