The Green Party has confirmed it will be contesting any forthcoming by-election in Tophill East on Portland following the resignation of sitting councillor Scott Horton on Friday morning.
The party came second in the by-election held last year, which returned Scott to office and says it is ready to offer voters a positive, credible alternative focused on standing up for the whole community.
Cllr Kia Pope, leader of the Green Group on Portland Town Council said:
“We don’t yet know the full circumstances surrounding the Councillor’s resignation, and it would be inappropriate to speculate. What we do know is that this community deserves strong, principled representation – someone who listens, who stands up for local people, and who never punches down.
We will be contesting this seat because we believe residents deserve a Councillor who genuinely cares about the area, understands the challenges people face, and works to bring people together rather than divide them.”
The Greens say they will be setting out their priorities for the area over the coming weeks and engaging with residents ahead of the by-election to ensure local voices are heard.
The Green’s statement of intent comes after a string of recent successes on Portland, with the election of their first Councillor Kia Pope; a second place in the Tophill East by-election for Mark Williams in 2025; and the election of Councillor Bradley Plant for Underhill shortly thereafter.
