Detectives investigating an alleged serious assault on Portland are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information to come forward – with three men being arrested.

Police were called to Verne Common Road at around 5.45pm yesterday, Wednesday 23 March 2016, following reports of an assault.

A woman, aged in her 30s, had sustained stab injuries. She was taken to Dorset County Hospital for treatment. Her condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

It is believed the woman sustained her injuries at a private address.

Officers are currently conducting house-to-house enquiries in the area and a property on East Weare Road has been cordoned off as part of the investigation.

Detective Inspector Kevin Lansdale, of Weymouth CID, said: “We are still investigating the circumstances surrounding how the woman sustained her injuries and I am asking anyone who may know anything about the incident to contact police on 101.

“I am particularly keen to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything out of the ordinary in East Weare Road or Verne Common Road yesterday morning or afternoon.

“I would like to reassure the public that this was an isolated incident and high-visibility patrols will continue in the area to offer reassurance to the community.”

Three men aged 30, 33 and 37 and all from Portland have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and are currently assisting officers with their enquiries.

Witnesses and anyone with information should call Dorset Police in confidence on 101 quoting incident number 23:274. Alternatively, call the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111 where mobile phone tariffs may apply.
