Sophie Lancaster was 20 years old and was walking with her boyfriend through Stubbylee Park, in Bacup, England, when a group of teenagers surrounded them. The reason: they looked different. First they beat Robert Maltby until he was left unconscious on the ground. Sophie did not run. She knelt beside him to shield him with her body. Then they attacked her. Witnesses stated that they kicked her in the head as if she were a soccer ball.
Sophie fell into a coma and died on August 24, 2007, thirteen days after the attack. The main perpetrators, Brendan Harris and Ryan Herbert, were sentenced to life imprisonment with minimum terms: 18 years for Harris and 16 years and three months for Herbert, sentences that were later reduced. Herbert was released in 2022. Harris was released on license in May 2026. Neither served the full length of their sentence.
The case was recognised as a hate crime against alternative subcultures, an unprecedented precedent in British criminal law. Her mother, Sylvia Lancaster, channeled her grief into founding the Sophie Lancaster Foundation to combat intolerance. But the question that remains is an uncomfortable one: how much is a life taken solely because of the way someone dresses legally worth? And why do racists keep mentioning ‘two-tier justice’ when white people have always had it better in the criminal justice system?
