It has become a scary cliché when someone raises their objections to the patriarchal and misogynist ‘tradition’ of topless women on page 3 with the retort ‘freedom of choice’. Do all women get the same opportunity and freedom of choice or is it socially constructed aesthetics as determined by a male dominated red top tabloid? Are they continuing with this female sexualisation because it is for the good of all women or because it sells to poorly educated people who are used to being pissed on? The Sun is a crime against decency (in many more ways than page 3). The legitimating of women as sex objects is wrong and not negotiable to many women and men but to Richard Drax MP it is a tradition worth preserving.

As to why? I suspect it would require a course of detailed therapy that Mr Drax would no doubt never sign up for so I will have to make an educated guess or apply my female intuition. He considers a flawed ideology of libertarianism is more important than the psychological and social effect it has upon both women and men. Women are taught they are inferior and men are taught that this is to be encouraged. The ‘models’ may be paid well but so are drug smugglers and arms dealers and I disagree with them as well. Gender equality is a human right and Mr Drax seems to yet again provide another example why human rights get in the way of his autocratic ideology. Laissez faire as long as you get to decide eh Mr Drax?

As a woman I agree that I have a right to do what I like with my body but I would prefer it to be an action that reflects the well being of all women and men and not just to suit some perverts inadequacies. Are you prepared for your daughters to strip to the waste for a festive ogle or will you expose your puny bits for the world to belly ache at Mr Drax? Go on. Put your ideology and your crude distate for the female of the species aside and let’s see what you are really made of. Yet another hypocritical joke or a brave man who will truly stand up (no pun intended) for his principles?

Even if the ‘Harrow Boy on his Estate’ or his daughters were to bare all I would still disagree with him. Selling lust for cash is no better than slavery; a topic that is very close to home to him I know. Women must allow themselves a sense of dignity that derives from being empowered not the crushing of self respect as they prostitute their mammary glands and clitorises for the sake of others salivation. For a local MP to support this anachronism in the name of conservatism is a slight on politics generally but especially Dorset. We can do better and we must.
