The family of the acclaimed British actor Tom Wilkinson, renowned for his memorable performance in The Full Monty, has sadly disclosed his passing at the age of 75.
Hailing from Yorkshire, Wilkinson portrayed the character Gerald Arthur Cooper in the 1997 comedy depicting the journey of unemployed steelworkers from Sheffield forming an all-male striptease act. His role earned him a BAFTA for best supporting actor. He further showcased his talent in films like Shakespeare in Love (1998) and the Christopher Nolan blockbuster Batman Begins (2005).
His illustrious career, spanning five decades garnered him recognition with two Oscar nominations. The first nod was for best actor in the 2001 drama In the Bedroom, followed by a nomination for best supporting actor in the 2007 legal thriller Michael Clayton. Additionally, he clinched a Golden Globe and an Emmy for his portrayal of Benjamin Franklin in the 2008 HBO series John Adams.

Wilkinson’s journey began in the Yorkshire valley of Wharfedale in 1948 before his family moved to Canada and later returned. His passion for acting blossomed during his studies at the University of Kent, where he majored in English and American literature.
The role of Gerald Arthur Cooper in The Full Monty catapulted him to fame, leading to a series of remarkable performances, such as portraying Carmine Falcone in Batman Begins. His career expanded to encompass prominent roles in US TV dramas, including John Adams, earning him an OBE for his contributions to drama in the 2005 New Year Honours list.
His final on-screen appearance reunited him with The Full Monty co-stars, Robert Carlyle and Mark Addy, in a 2023 Disney+ series bearing the same name.
Off-screen, Wilkinson married fellow actor Diana Hardcastle in 1988, and they shared two daughters. While they appeared together in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and as an on-screen couple in the 2014 thriller Good People, their roles didn’t intersect in the former film.
In the wake of his sudden passing at home on December 30, his family issued a statement expressing profound sorrow at the loss of Tom Wilkinson.
