An artist who runs courses at Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Kingcombe Centre will be exhibiting her work at the RHS London Botanical Art Show on 26thand 27thFebruary 2016. Her illustrations are inspired by the iconic hedgerows, trees and shrubs at Kingcombe Meadows in West Dorset.
Sarah Morrish has been working on the hedgerow project for over a year now, illustrating the twigs and buds found during the winter. With a background in conservation and ecology, Sarah wanted to highlight the importance of hedgerows and their preservation through her art work.
The buds have been illustrated like you have never seen before, with some up to x20 life-size in scale, including a life-size set of twig illustrations. The Botanical Art Show has a world-wide reputation and Sarah will be exhibiting with 34 other artists from around the world.
Sarah said, “The hedgerows found on and bordering the Kingcombe Meadows Nature Reserve have always fascinated me. The history and ecological value associated with them has deepened my interest further.”
“All through the seasons there is always something to see, but the trees and shrubs in winter truly reveal their structure and beauty at this time of year. Walking past them you may not readily notice the features and colours of the finer details, but look closer and you will be amazed. It is hoped that this series of paintings and illustrations will reveal some of this beauty and increase visitor’s interest in recognising tree species in winter.”
Sarah is also going to donate scans of each of the paintings and illustrations to DWT.
DWT’s West Dorset Area Manager, Sam Hamer, said, “We would like to congratulate Sarah on her wonderful work. It’s great to see the natural world being interpreted in different ways, allowing people to look at it in a new light, and hopefully encouraging them to take a closer look when they’re exploring our nature reserves. We are lucky to have Sarah teaching courses at the Kingcombe Centre, and encourage anyone who feels inspired by her work to come and have a go themselves.”
