Exciting new arrivals at Margaret Green Animal Rescue

Staff at the Church Knowle branch of Margaret Green Animal Rescue have some interesting new arrivals to care for after four Degus, two Mud Turtles and one Albino Leopard Gecko arrived at the sanctuary. As it turns out – one of the Degus was pregnant!

The animals were brought in after the team at Church Knowle were asked to help with a case being dealt with by the local Environmental Health Department.

“The Gecko in particular arrived in poor condition” says Ellie Makin, Centre Manager of the Church Knowle branch, near Corfe Castle. “He was dehydrated and has probably not been given the vitamin supplement he needs with his food. He was also very underweight. We have had him here for a few days now though and he has found his appetite again. He ate seven big juicy wax worms today, which is very unusual, but in this case it is not a bad thing!”

Staff were even more excited to come in to work on Saturday morning to find out that one of the Degus, who has been named Britney, had given birth to seven babies.

“We couldn’t believe it when we peeped in to Britney’s nest box and saw seven tiny Degus snuggled up! Says Ellie. They are absolutely lovely”.

Staff will be keeping a close eye on all the new arrivals for a few months before they will be available for rehoming but all are available to view at the visitor centre. Entrance is free and other animals available for rehoming include cats, chickens, horses, sheep, rabbits, pigs, ponies and goats.

Although based in Church Knowle, near Corfe Castle, Margaret Green Animal Rescue rehomes thousands of animals each year throughout the whole of Dorset, including Bournemouth, Poole and Weymouth.

“We would love to teach people more about looking after these types of pets so please feel free to come down and have a look” says Ellie. “You can even bring a picnic if the weather is nice!”
