Creative Industries students at Weymouth College recently pitched their work to celebrated chef and restaurateur Mark Hix for the opportunity to win a commission at the new HIX Academy restaurant.

Art-lover Hix, whose London restaurants feature work by Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin among others, offered students the chance to compete for a featured place in the new restaurant’s gallery space as well as a generous cash prize and a chance to showcase the work in London.

The shortlisted pieces were selected from a specially commissioned Creative Industries project, ‘Sensation’, which explores the unique relationship people have with food and dining. Photography and media students documented the artists’ presentations to Hix, who has the difficult task of picking a winner from the outstanding submissions.

The competition finalists are artists Amanda Knight, Jenny Vyvyan-Penney and Alison Chisholm, whose entries can be viewed in the HIX Academy restaurant at Weymouth College. The overall winner will be selected by Mark Hix at the HIX Academy’s official launch event later this week.

The HIX Academy is a collaborative project between Weymouth College and Mark Hix. Based at the College’s Cranford Avenue campus, the Academy trains future chefs and restaurant staff for work in the high-end catering and restaurant industry. The restaurant opens to the public later this month.
