12 borough council seats are up for grabs as Weymouth & Portland residents go to the polls on Thursday 7 May 2015.

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council runs elections by thirds, meaning 12 seats are elected three out of every four years.

Councillors play a vital role in the borough and help voice the opinions of the local community. They help scope the future of services by collectively carrying out policy making and contributing to the formation and scrutiny of Weymouth & Portland Borough Council’s policies, budgets and strategies.

By representing the views of local people as a community advocate, councillors ensure that local interests are taken into account.

The borough council has put together a leaflet with information which explains who can stand for election, the role of councillors and the nomination process. There is also practical information on time commitments, allowances and support provided for councillors.

More information is available at www.dorsetforyou.com/become-a-councillor/Weymouth-and-Portland

For a copy of the leaflet please contact the borough council’s Democratic Services Team on 01305 252394 or email [email protected].

The Democratic Services Team will also be able to offer advice and suggest committee meetings that interested individuals may wish to attend or arrange meetings with serving councillors.

The deadline for the submission of papers for people who wish to stand for election is 4pm on Thursday 9 April.
