Borough council invites residents to Armed Forces Day flag-raising

Weymouth & Portland Borough Council will be holding an official flag-raising ceremony as part of the national ‘Fly a Flag for our Armed Forces’ day at the Commercial Road council offices on Monday 20 June at 10.30am.  
 
The Mayor of Weymouth & Portland, Cllr Richard Kosior, will lead the flag-raising ceremony accompanied by a short reading and prayer from the Merchant Navy Chaplin Rev Dennis Mould. Joining the service will be representatives from local armed forces, veterans, Standard Bearers, Military Vehicle Trust and council staff. The general public are also invited to attend.
 
Cllr Richard Kosior, Mayor of Weymouth & Portland, said: “The borough organises many civic events to commemorate and celebrate our strong links with the armed forces. This flag-raising ceremony is an important token of our appreciation.
 
“We continue to engage with many local veterans and associations throughout the country and abroad. We would like to express our thanks for the passion and enthusiasm of these groups and individuals.”
 
Ceremonies will take place across the country with flags flown until after Armed Forces Day on Saturday 25 June 2016.
 
Don’t forget this year’s major Armed Forces Day Celebrations will Take place on 18 and 19 June thanks to £7,500 worth of funding support from the MOD.

The festivities will kick off on Saturday 18 June with a magnificent military beach assault and bridge building on Weymouth Beach (Pavilion end) starting at noon. This will be carried out by the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers. This will be followed by a ‘1940s comes to Portland’ event from noon to 4pm at Osprey Leisure Centre, Portland. Stands and displays full of information from various veteran’s agencies and charity organisations will be on show for visitors to learn about the important role they play and how to support them.

One of the popular highlights of this year’s Armed Forces Day Celebrations will be a major military parade with almost 2,000 proud marching veterans, marching bands and over 80 historic military vehicles at 11am on Sunday 19 June. This will be preceded by an open-air service at the British Cenotaph on Weymouth Seafront. 

The prestigious Band of HM Royal Marines, will lead the Sunday parade, followed by the 33rd armoured Engineer Squadron, 2 6 Engineer Regiment undertaking their freedom of the borough parade along Weymouth Seafront celebrating the 300th anniversary of the formation of the Corps.
