Bournemouth Council backs BMX Club to be National race venue

Bournemouth BMX club, based in Iford, has upgraded their track thanks to funding from Bournemouth Council’s Community Action Fund.

The Council scheme which aims to support voluntary organisations with small grants, provided £8,000 of funding last year to help towards improvements to the club’s facilities.

The initiative was set up by the Council to provide financial support to groups, who through the work they do, are helping to reduce anti-social behaviour, provide activities to reduce health inequalities and improve engagement within the community.

Since receiving the money last year the BMX club has carried out improvements to the start hill and installed a new safety start gate to keep the riders competitive nationally and secure Bournemouth BMX clubs position on the Regional BMX series race calendar.

On Sunday 18 Mayat 11.30am an official opening of the new start gate will take place with a day of free and fun activities planned for people of all ages. Riders will be able to take part in open-track sessions, coaches will be on hand to help and provide advice and a specific ‘girls only’ session will take place to encourage more girls to join in the sport.

Councillor Lawrence Williams, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism & Culture, said:

“The BMX club provides a great service and we are delighted to have been able to support them with this funding. The Community Action Fund was set up to help organisations exactly like this; the facilities they provide are used and enjoyed by a number of our residents. I look forward to seeing the benefits these improvements to the track will bring.”

Michael Whittaker, Chairman of the BMX club, said: “Everyone at the club would like to say a big thank you to the Council for helping make this happen. The benefit to the club from these improvements will be huge, a real benefit to grass roots BMX racing.”
