From helping people with essential items like bedding, crockery and cutlery, to a Christmas lights experience at the Nothe Fort, Weymouth Town Council has approved grants to two local groups.
The funds were awarded at last night’s Finance & Governance Committee meeting (Wednesday 22nd September), and go towards helping community, voluntary or charitable organisations with their work in the area.
The latest grants of £2,000 each were awarded to The Lantern Trust in Weymouth and the Nothe Fort’s Christmas Tunnel of Lights scheme.
The Lantern Trust’s ‘Essential Items Project’ helps people who lack the means to purchase ID, such as birth certificates, passports, driving licences and citizens cards. These types of ID are required when accessing accommodation in the private sector, opening a bank account or accessing the Dorset Council Housing Register.
And they also help people moving into accommodation who need essential items such as bedding, crockery, cutlery, kettles, toasters, white goods and basic mobile phones.
The Nothe Fort is hoping to attract visitors to Weymouth for a fund day out during the festive shopping period and the post-Christmas sales with its tunnel of lights attraction. It was inspired by a similar show at the Shipwreck Museum in Cornwall and promises a creative experience that can be enjoyed by day, and at night.
This grant is subject to Weymouth BID also approving funding next week.
Cllr David Gray, Chair of the Finance & Governance Committee, said: “These grants are important to Weymouth Town Council because they can help make a difference to the lives of people living in and around Weymouth. And events like the tunnel of lights also provide more reasons for people to visit the area for a great day out.
“We have a diverse range of community, voluntary groups and charitable organisations in our area, and I’m delighted to see more than £8,000 has been allocated over the course of the year since the scheme launched in April. If you know a local group that could benefit from funding, then we would love to hear from you.”
Eligible groups can use the grants for a range of purposes, including funding new projects, buying necessary equipment, events, or training. More information on Weymouth Town Council grants can be found here.
