Well done to everyone who joined the successful demonstration in Portland last Saturday to say Refugees are welcome – No to the Prison Barge!

Few consider it is right to house 500 people in a barge in Portland harbour, especially when they have fled from war, catastrophe or persecution. And when Portland and Weymouth already suffer from inadequate NHS and public services. But there are some, including in the government, who are scapegoating refugees and spreading division.

So we have called a public meeting on Tuesday 13 June in Portland  to discuss the next steps in the campaign.  The meeting will agree demands for our NHS and public services in the area and plan an action campaign. And while we continue to oppose the barge, the meeting will discuss practical steps for Dorset people to show they welcome any refugees who are placed on it.

We also plan to leaflet the whole of Portland for the meeting and with a fact sheet giving the truth about refugees.  We plan to launch the leafleting this Saturday.
