Cornwall antifascists set to embarrass racists for the second time in a month

Residents of Cornwall are getting ready to take a stand against racism on Sunday 26th March.

Cornwall Resists has called a counter demo outside the Beresford Hotel in Newquay to oppose the far-right who are objecting to refugees being housed there.

This is the second time counter protesters have gathered in Newquay to oppose racism. The first time counter protesters, who vastly outnumbered the racists, held their ground until the last of the far-right had packed up and left. They were thanked by the refugees, who held up signs and made heart signs through the window.

The protest has been called by fraudster Mylo Gregory, who has convictions for hitting a woman and drug driving. It was originally called after a man was charged with rape who had an address on the same road as the hotel. Gregory immediately jumped to the racist conclusion that the alleged perpetrator was a resident of the hotel.

However, after it was confirmed that the person charged was not a resident, he changed the event description without even acknowledging or apologising for his grossly offensive and damaging presumption.

A spokesperson for Cornwall Resists stated:

“We embarrassed the racists last time they gathered in Newquay and we’ll do it again. There is no place for this hate in our community. We live and work in Cornwall and we celebrate diversity. Our patron saint was a refugee, and we are proud of this history.

“The organisers of this protest claim they’re not racist. But they made a racist and dangerous assumption based on the alleged perpetrator’s name and his address. They didn’t even have the decency to apologise for their mistake.

“Instead they’ve carried on with their plans to protest outside the hotel. Now they’re claiming it’s about housing in Cornwall. This is nothing but a smokescreen for their far-right agenda.  The housing crisis in Cornwall isn’t caused by refugees. It’s caused by second home owners who’ve turned Cornwall into a playground for the rich. There are over 12,000 second homes in Cornwall, and less than 200 refugees staying in Beresford.

“We will stand and oppose the far-right every time they try to take to our streets. Cornwall is antifascist!”
