Dorset Mind is delighted to announce their Children & Young People’s (CYP) Service, ‘Dorset Mind Your Head’, counselling service is now open for referrals.

This service reopens at a difficult time for many young people. COVID Social Mobility and Opportunities Study, COSMO 2022 report found that more than 4 in 10 young people are above the threshold for “probable mental ill health”.

During an uncertain time for young people and adults, it is important safe spaces are available within local communities, empowering young people to talk about their emotions and feelings with a trusted adult.

In a survey of over 2,000 parents commissioned by BBC Bitesize and Netmums, they foundthat 74% of parents are concerned about their child’s mental health.

As a mental health charity, Dorset Mind understands the concerns of parents and guardians in finding affordable support for a young person under their care. With increased demand on local NHS services, local charities such as Dorset Mind step in to support waitlist times.

Dorset Mind provides a subsidised 1-1 support service with a qualified counsellor for young people aged between 11-17. Their support service provides a free initial confidential assessment, to ensure the appropriate support for the young person. They will then be invited to attend weekly counselling sessions, for up to 6 weeks, each session will be 50 minutes.

Dr Andy Mayers, Dorset Mind Patron and Principal Academic at Bournemouth University said: “The reopening of these counselling services is excellent news for young people across Dorset. The last few years have been a huge challenge for them, but we can use this support to give young people the tools to manage their lives more productively”.

Counselling can be a life-changing experience. Dorset Mind’s friendly CYP Counsellors will provide young people with tools to support their own well-being and explore solutions to problems they may be facing. Talking therapies can build confidence, and self-esteem, supporting the growth and development of young minds.

Barbara Montagna and Christine Bridger, Counsellors and CYP Team Leaders at Dorset Mind said: “We are both so happy to be reopening the counselling service for young people at Dorset Mind, as these are such challenging times”.

Feedback from young people who’ve received support through Dorset Mind’s CYP Counselling Service shows a positive experience after reaching out for support:

It’s been very helpful to have someone to talk to and to be heard/supported. I have gained so much confidence and strength

“I’m finding out more things about myself every day. I can ask for help now”

Dorset Mind’s Children & Young Persons (CYP) Counselling Service accepts referrals from parents, GP Practices and professionals working with young people, provided parental consent is given (for those 13 and under).
