Do as I say, not as I do’ – says our leader, Boris.

The irony of a tory health minister contracting the coronavirus (COVID-19) is bemusing. What’s more, is Boris Johnson being in close contact with the minister, yet ignoring his own health advice to self-isolate if in close contact with infected individuals. He has refused to do this and refused to be checked for the diagnosis. This will undoubtedly increase the chances of other ministers contracting the virus. Once again, it’s one rule for Boris and another rule for the rest of the UK.

We were informed on a national TV broadcast to wash our hands for 20 seconds. After Boris returned from his weekend away during the corona emergency, we were told to self-isolate should we think we have symptoms or have been in close contact with someone who has been diagnosed with the disease. All reasonable guidelines, but delayed advice for the country. However, why did the health minister contract the virus if she had been following her own devised instructions?

The answer is that their ‘delay’ phase of tackling the epidemic was unsuccessful. Their containment phase will be far too late. Italy began isolating cities and larger regions far sooner than we are. The conclusion from a minister already being affected by the virus proves the government has behaved incompetently to the virus, and no matter how much the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, throws money at the issue – they have acted too late. People have already died, and people will continue to die because their delay phase has failed!

I will end on one point which will bemuse all of us. Boris Johnson was in close contact with the minister and he refuses to self-isolate. There should be no need for refusal if he were to follow his own self-isolation guidelines. This demonstrates grandiosity and magical thinking if Boris believes he is invincible. Boris’ degree of self-entitlement may well come back to bite him if he continues to ignore the simple rules, he has laid out for the rest of us.

Remember: do as Boris says, not how he does.
