Distraction Burglars Targeting the Elderly

Distraction burglary is when a thief uses methods of false pretense to gain entrance into someone home and then robs them.

Burglars in Dorset have been targeting one of the most vulnerable populations – the elderly.  According to the Dorset Police, on one day alone in October they received 3 separate reports of distraction burglaries in Poole, Broadstone and Ferndown.

The burglar in Poole was described as a tall and broad man who looked like he was around 35.  he has a long nose and black hair.

The burglaries in Broadstone and Fernown were conducted by 2 men.  One was a man around 55 wearing a hat and the other man was around 35 with brown hair.

Luckily, none of these burglars succeeded in taking any goods from the homes they entered.  The police is still investigating if these were standalone incidents or connected.

It is always necessary to take precautions to stay safe, however given these incidents, even more so.

Advice to stay safe:

·         Don’t open the door to anyone who is selling something or asking you to sign up for their project.  This is imperative to keep in mind, no matter how urgent the caller insists it is that you let him/her inside.

·         While you are talking to people you don’t know you should keep the deadbolt chain locked.  If you don’t have a high quality deadbolt, you should contact a trusted locksmith such as Anytime Locksmiths who can be reached at 0330-088-2969.

·         Check that all your locks are high quality.  If you have recently moved or given out your keys to neighbors or someone you may suspect to be untruthful, contact a trusted locksmith such as Anytime Locksmiths to rekey your home.
